Wednesday, January 14, 2015 Y 10:57 AM I think if someone had told me what, and how, this year would have ended..... err.... wrapped up, I woulda said, "are you shitting me?" But ultimately it isn't how one begins but rather how you end and fortunately for everything that happened there were far greater rewards in my life that far outweighed any of the negative, and or daunting experiences. I begin 2014 resigning my position at TRAX Records for many, many reasons, but one of them was because I needed to be able to lead my own life for a while. A life where I was not managing a label and running my own things, etc. I decided to finally allow myself some time off from a rigorous work schedule that begin from being in school since I was 3. Mainly I just felt like I was unable to be young towards the end because I was too worried about staying on the hamster wheel but ultimately I felt like I was running out of steam, things to say, and a grasp of the reality that I need around me to be able to be fully human, or at least so I feel like one. After January I focused my energies on my book (which was supposed to come out last year, but my computer busted at New Wave the night before I was going to leave to San Francisco). I finished my book after a breakup with someone who really taught me a lot about myself but also finally made me feel valuable in departments that I thought I had no worth in. Through the beginning of the year I switched over to becoming fully vegan and being at the gym almost all the time, and walking Choco and Coco. Also, I did release a record for Record Store Day in the UK (TRANSTrax). Around May, but even prior to that ( I had a lot of fun on cam) I was beginning to blossom into my own sexuality, which sounds stupid but when you're constantly moving and focusing on the grind those things took the back burner. I was, even since 2013, feeling my oats. And yes, they were being soaked. So for a while I just wanted to focus on myself and focus on the things that made me feel good. I was around boys for a while, and letting them enjoy me. In May I met a guy and from there began a whirlwind crazy relationship, one of which, I still think was great, and quite honestly the type of shit everyone goes through when they're like 16 but in this case I was 25 and socially retarded in several departments. After we broke up and my first back injury ever at the gym, I decided that instead of feeling bad about myself that I was just going to lead my own life and do things I was scared of. I decided to go full force with guys and see where it lead. While I only had a short month of this, it really ended up opening my eyes that the situations, and those experiences made me feel empty, or no better than before. It was like I was doing things just to see if I could do them. Unfortunately during these times I began neglecting the core components of my life (my babies, and the gym). I was doing Insanity for two whole months but due to space issues I could not finish the last month, but it was during the last month (August) that I began getting to know someone on a different level. At this I even released my own first mini-movie Sunday. After I decided to finally fucking travel, a luxury I was never able to have before. I went to San Francisco and spent a layover twice in Los Angeles. I know to a lot of people it's probably stupid or banal, but to me it was finally seeing something else, and living a life that was not the same one that I had lived for over 25 years. Chicago is nice but.... yeah. I was finally feeling a sense of WOW-ness all over again. It was almost like how I was feeling when I was a freshman in college and getting to know the city. But like a lot of things in my life, one new thing was not enough. I ended up throughout the last end of the year just living and trying to shove experience after experience down my throat just for the sake of being to do them. I was traveling, meeting a new guy, making a home with my now boyfriend, adopting two cats, having two homes, going back to school, etc. I ended up doing so much that by the end I was less WOW and becoming more unable to unknot and fully appreciate the beauty and experiences that I was leading. Yes, I did try to be present at all moments, but there was so much going on that I don't know how well I could have done that. Towards the end of the year, and a huge mistake, but one I'm glad I committed, I was finally able to reflect on what was happening to me in terms of solid concrete issues going through my mind. I was able to identify and really solidify the type of person that I am, at least today. Today I sit here in my home in Logan Square with one of my new babies laying next to me and with Ashlee Simpson pandora playing in the background on our tv (Xtina's "Genie In a Bottle"playing) looking at writing on my new mac with my new camera next to me and I'm still trying to untangle just how amazing last year was. But at the same time moving forward and realizing that I can't continue taking a break.
During 2014 I finally decided that I can not continue shooting with film. Quite simply, shooting with film has become so excessively expensive to shoot with that it has become detrimental to my process and my body of work because I can't fully express myself because the costs alone are censoring me and preventing me from fully being myself. I feel at peace with my decision, and I feel at the same time a sense of sorrow because shooting with film has been something so important for me but ultimately I would rather be able to make photographs than wait until I can afford to do so.
So in all, last year was so massive for me that writing about it now has honestly made me realize just how enormous it was and how fitting it into one post is nearly impossible. But I'm just proud of myself for having a year that was just so different. My dad and my brother apparently had a conversation once when they saw me walking Choco in 2013 about how it was sad that I never went anywhere. The only places they saw me going were up 3 - 5 miles of Dundee Rd and back home. And I'm glad that in 2014 not only was I able to expand my bubble, but to burst it. My Nails
It’s funny because this morning pushed me over the edge of a problem that I thought I was over trying to combat. I’m currently wearing this beautiful Deborah Lipmann (Glitter and Be Gay) polish that I got from Sephora. It’s partially holographic, and it’s a glitter polish which is pretty dimensional in terms of what most glitter polishes tend to be. This is especially true of polishes that are standards, like OPI and essie, because as we (the nail polish lovers of the world) know the majority of glitter polishes tend to have too much silver glitter which tends to overpower the rest of the color. This is partially a reason why I love Deborah Lippmann – her polishes are always, mainly, glitter polishes but they are far more than that. These polishes are celebrations, they are unlike what most polishes tend to be, and they are – when they are being worn – something just special. But in my world only a fraction of the people that truly matter will express the same joy I have for the color that I have on. I mean this morning my mom was talking to me about how we’re going to need to have a conversation (a deep one according to her) about how my sister (the younger one) is having a huge problem, more so than normal, about me. Me meaning my lifestyle. Which really means how fucking gay, and or, how much of a fag I am. It’s normal for my sisters, and my mom, to express their displeasures with me, mainly (my brother is also gay) because my appearance to them is way over the top. Sometimes when I’m being discussed I feel like I’m actually wearing something more on the drag queen scale, which would be great, but that’s just not me. Anyways, their huge issue is not that I’m in full face, or that I walk like I had butter lubing my hips – the problem is always that my nails are painted. Now the reasons of why I do them are independent and not even important to this, but I definitely got into them because my friend Marta always had super pretty polish on and well, why the fuck not?! So anyways, the problem earlier one used to be about what my cousins would think and what my family would be accosted to (visually) upon seeing me wearing color on my nails. This situation got so heated once when my (older) sister was going to move back into the house and the family pretty much wanted to kick me out of the house because by me being there, with painted nails, would expose my nephew to deep psychological damage. In their words they were saying things like “what will children say to him when you come to pick him up from school?” “what example are you giving him?” “what if he came up and wanted his nails painted?”. The problems were based on this idea, that in their mind is deeply imparted by folklore, that my existence, my way of being, and my “lifestyle” were the equivalents of visual rape. By me being around him, and growing up around me, that somehow I was exposing him not only to harm but also to an eventual psychological crisis. Somehow my mother and sisters (the main complainers) believe so much that I am not only a disrespectful selfish fag, but also that my visual expression is somehow throwaway. As if who I am, how I look, and how I walk around in this world is nothing more than an option that I choose to impart upon myself – which in turn means that I have somehow slapped them in the face by making their lives harder than it should be. In their thinking they can not understand how I can’t just adapt to their standards of how I should be, how I should speak, and even the people that I’m attracted to. The conversations are never celebrating my beautiful new shirts, or nail polish, or hair – the conversations between my sisters and mom tend to be hostile because to them I’m, metaphorically speaking, stabbing our family in the heart. I’m somehow constantly, in their mind, constantly smearing the family name, and in turn how people see them, because I choose to be just a goddamn problem. Because I don’t look like the brothers of their friends, or the sons that other mothers raised. I’ll never be walking around looking like every other ‘guy’ that they see, dated, and the like. I’m like this amalgamation of queerness that is fine for their friends to have but not me, because they have to live with me. And the consequences that being one of my family members bring. This is of course the realities for anyone, in any family! This is the truth when my sisters didn’t like people who were my friends, or when their exes saw me walking down the street. But the problems are not rooted in reality because my brother is also gay, but he passes. His boyfriend passes, and when they are together their gayness is not being smeared onto them like butter on toast. Rather, when the neighbor boy saw my brother and his bf making out my mom was more worried about what would be said about her, and our family. And I don’t blame her for thinking like this because the realities are that I have a vast amount of privilege over them. I’m able to be in worlds where people like me are celebrated. I live in a world where my differences are the same thing that have made me so successful, but to my mother and sisters their realities are more grounded in a world where people like me are perverts and clowns. A world where people like me are pervasive for children and where my influence would corrupt anyone of a pure mind. The seeds of this is linked to an idea that self-censoring myself would make these issues go away. Now it must be said the only problems with me being gay tend to come from their own homophobic lovers, and also their own homophobic worldviews. They have gay friends, gay acquaintances, etc. but the difference is that they don’t live with them. These people are ‘adult friends’. These are the people that you bring into your world when children are not around. We are ‘after-dark’ friends and our existence and expression of self is something that can be turned on and off like a lamp. But what bothers me the most is the sheer hate that come from my families lips, without them thinking that what they are saying is not hateful. Sure, I can be the educated well-mannered intelligent brother but only if I don’t show any of the gay parts. My mom, in my own head, would rather have a thug for a son vs me. Because the people in her mind who are deserving of awe are people who pass and have a wife. In her worldview these people fit and don’t cause murmurs around her inner circles. But the problem with this thinking is that: ALMOST NO ONE FUCKING CARES. And if they did, SO FUCKING WHAT. Instead of them standing up to their bf’s or their friends and defending us for being gay, or for me, or my nails, they don’t. Rather I am the problem. I’m the problem and I continue to choose being so by not turning ‘me’ off.
The problems have only risen now that I moved in with my boyfriend, and now that my younger sister is pregnant. The problems really rose when I brought my bf to Thanksgiving. The only person who was livid that he was coming was my younger sister because we didn’t allow her baby daddy to come to the dinner. Rather, my sister chose to argue that my mom is basically allowing a perversion to come to dinner as opposed to allowing her to bring her asshat of a partner. My bf, the same one who was in the kitchen helping out vs. a guy who makes her life horrible. Now I will not sit here smearing her and her choices, but rather I am shining the light that to my sister my relationship is the equivalent to lighting the house on fire. She screamed, called my brother and I fags, and so on. Now that her baby shower is approaching the conversation has begun again. My mom began to say to me early on that I can come to the baby shower but that my sister had expressed that she didn’t want me to have my nails painted. And the same reasonings came out. “You have to respect the house” “You have to respect your sister”. But what she and my sister continue to fail to see is that I’m not a valve, and that the way I present myself is an inherent part of who I am. Just because it’s something frivolous in their mind, does not mean it is to me. To me this is part of who I am. And that alone should warrant my right to be whoever I fucking want to be without threat that somehow my sister is going to shout at my family, and me, and my bf, because she sees my life as an option. This of course has a lot to do with how engrained culturally how our being, our ‘self’, is for sale. It’s like this morning when I was listening to Feast of Fun (interview with Johnny Mcgovern from Hey Qween) and they were discussing how his friend put on full face to go to a taping of Wendy. The producers, in their minds, saw the ‘drag’ as a costume. And minimized the possibility that perhaps this is how said person sees themselves. Like the guy from Nordstrom who recounted, to my boyfriend, the story of how he can’t paint his nails at work (but loves nail polish) because he works in the Men’s department. It’s all bullshit being reasoned in the name of respectability. The idea that what someone wears, or doesn’t, triggers being respectful or disrespectful. It’s like every job requires an extensive, and overreaching, agenda that requires the person to be someone who they maybe aren’t. And if it isn’t that changing themselves is just a mere option that doesn’t harm said individual. It’s these same ideas that are backed time and time again by my family who thinks that my nails are nothing but frivolous and to whoever reads this and questions why it’s such a big deal. I love my family dearly and this is me not ranting about them or wanting to hurt them. Rather I am just tired of feeling like somehow I have to suppress myself for their sake. I’m tired of feeling like somehow I’m a perversion and should hide in a closet because I’ll corrupt children.
As the holidays approach I know my mom will once again have her tantrum that includes telling me to unpaint my nails. Threatening to cancel xmas, and then just giving in. I’m sick of allowing a system that allows corporations to dictate how we look based on their ideas of what respect is. I’m tired of people being expected feel less than if they can’t conform. My way of being is nothing compared to what other people express but that can only make me feel a fraction of what people like that have to face every-fucking-day-of-their-fucking-life. It saddens me that I can’t have a safe space with my family, rather the safe space is actually in public. The public has become my shelter where compliments are given to me by women, or by the public that celebrates my work. I just wish sometimes that my family would see how great of a person I am as opposed to seeing all my greatness devalued by my faggotry. I know that I’m strong enough to handle things like this, and privileged enough to deconstruct and know why things like this occur. But that doesn’t make the situations any less tiring and irate.
At the end of the day I am going to continue painting my nails, and having these same conversations with my mom. She may never change, and I’ll never back down. Fuck, I may not even attend my sisters baby shower just to spare her any sort of rage that could be caused my me being there (and to spare myself the possible humiliation that she may place on me and my boyfriend), but I feel like I needed to write this because I know other people face this, and will face this – especially since it is the holiday season. But who knows, maybe one day my family will come around but until that day I’m going to continue being me because if I don’t do it for myself then I’m not living my reality. And if my reality to them is nothing but a perverse faggot who should be tucked away like a dead corpse than so be it. I’m not going to hate them, or fight them, rather I am going to continue being my own fucking advocate, because sometimes in this world if you don’t do things for yourself no one is going to do them for you.

sometimes when i think of 2006 i get full of sadness because in a way i was never able to fully let go of that year. it's like i think that year has somehow continuously bleed over every year. it's as if somehow i was unable to realize that somehow 2006 isn't some sort of continuous cut that has continued year after year. sure new years come, and sure they end, but in someway i feel like i'm constantly measuring and subtracting how many years it was since then. It began with 2008, and then '09, then '10 and so on and so on. It's like somehow that was a year that I counter as the middle of my life. It was in 2006 that I finished my junior year of high school and also the beginning of my senior year of high school. i guess in many ways it was like the crossroads of adolescence and what i later would find out to be the beginning of adulthood (meaning I would no longer be having carte blanche into the i'm in high school card). Somehow it's like a year that somehow in my mind doesn't age. somehow i can't see the music or the movies that came out then as classics. it's like i hear them and the refreshing radio-like quality is still there for me. just the other night i was watching White Chicks and i realized that the one gwen stefani song (it's my life) was older than I thought it was. i feel like somehow almost the new millennium has an inconsistent ageless quality to it. there's a part of it to me that seems as new as it seemed back then but now those music videos are aged by the cars they drove and the cell phones that they used. it's strange to think that in less two years the iphone would begin to dominate and change the world. it's stranger to think that the cell phone models that were so became so passé' in such a short amount of time. or is it that my vision and experience of time is somehow stunted by my own perceptions and needs to keep it, at least in my recollection, as something that never went away. 2006 was a great year, but I've had more significant years. But somehow 2006 retains the quality of what i feel many other people probably have in their own lives. is it me or does "the sweet escape" sound as new as music on the radio today? i still remember the air, i still remember running in the forest preserve and listening to my ipod (madonna's confessions album and gwen stefani's debut album). I remember going to the movies and seeing Borat and 300. I remember so much, or so I think. Admittedly, I constantly bleed other years and lump them into this year. i feel like it's hard to let go. somehow letting go makes me feel like i'm forgetting and almost allowing the fact that i'm aging to become a reality. i guess in part it is also part of knowing that the fondness that i have for the things i did then is only special to me. because kids will grow and not know what it was like to hear the pussycat dolls' i hate this part right here' verse to come on the speakers. or not to know how cool gwen's "luxurious" felt at that moment in time. it's crazier to know that in 40 years those years might just be passed by (in a collective mind sort of way).
i guess that's why it becomes hard to let new things into our lives, and into our conscious when we become older. it's hard to accept and let go. it's hard to feel like somehow our lives experience are nothing in the grand scheme of things. it's hard knowing that somehow i'm not the center of the universe, and that the things i most cherish are unimportant to the majority of the world and the world that has yet to be born and created. it's harder to know that when the time comes no one will know the feeling i got when i heard gwen's "wind it up".
but i guess if i don't let go that nothing will ever be special. it's harder done that said but i can't let one year to dictate my life. and i guess by accepting new music and new things doesn't necessarily mean that i'm letting go of my youth, of my being, of my existence. i guess it just means that time is going to happen and that letting go is something that i have to do in order to experience the refreshing vision that i felt when i was young. i just hope that i don't become a shell. i hope i can experience life as i once did. i just hope that i can find the romance in everything like i once had.

One day while I was going to the doctor ( I was walking) and after some terrible things that happened BF was skyping or whatsapp-ing me or something and telling me that 34MAG wanted a mixtape and to send over songs. I originally was like omg frantic omg gotta send over songs but I really wanted to send over things that were more having to do with my life mood at the moment. So I chose a ton of instrumentals, classicals, scores, and even when I was on the way I just started singing this remix of Bjork's "Human Behavior". For me the tape just purged a lot out of my system, and as always, BF manages to complete the other half of what I'm feeling as well. But the tape really reflects the dynamic changes in our lives from when we first began. Who knew how much two years can change you, you know?

Labels: film, jorge cruz, monamiejorge, sunday 0 comments Friday, June 20, 2014 Y 6:43 PM So it's been like two months since my last post but this time my veganism has had no slip-ups, at least intentionally. I mean we all know sometimes anything could slip under our radar! But this will not be as long as my last post simply because well I don't have to. Things I've noticed: Lots of fat loss Somewhat weight loss Lots of thin lean muscle showing up I like love Trader Joe's -- but the selection is still too small. I love you chutney burgers but is can't have you too often. Intolerance for oil (or too much of it) Huge skin improvement My tiredness and wanting to eat all the time has subsided. Peanut butter, and jelly, may be life companions of mine. I get full a lot easier but need to eat again sooner, but not as much. I'm kinda grossed out whenever I smell dairy, and when I smell it it's pretty easy to smell it. I still eat a million avocados. Vegan ice cream, you da bomb. My sweets craving has decreased but now I'm eating much better quality sweets because my chocolate isn't composed of chemicals and perfumes. Actually eating in general is richer and more fulfilling because pretty much everything I eat doesn't make me sick or uncomfortable. It's hard to feel sick when your diet consists of avocados, peanut butter and potato chips. Eating out is a luxury, but also something I've learned not to depend on and am craving it less and less. Culturally it's hard with friends and all but I don't want to eat out often either. It's just not great perhaps because somehow outside food still makes me feel bad/different. Not having constant stomach aches and stuff really made me forget what that feeling is like. So now if I ever feel that way I automatically feel like walking or eating something to aide me quick. I feel comfortable. And I'm still curious to hear what things you make. I understand now that when vegans and vegetarians get together we talk a lot about food because simply we live off of recommendations and tips. I can see how people on the outside can see this as some sort of annoying habit but it's really the only way I was introduced to things like vegan chorizo and vegan ice cream. So here's some pics below. P.s small side note **+ just because I've eaten things that are supposed to be fake meats it isn't because I miss meat. Or the taste of it. I feel like I miss the memory of the food item from a whole perspective, such as the bread, texture, etc. but I'm not looking or living a life where I'm constantly finding replacements for meats. The fake meats I have gotten have been on a whim, or out of curiosity. I'm not saying there's anything awful about them but they aren't really something, I think, anyone's diet should depend on.
trader joe's vegan hot dogs -- like a little over 2 dollars This ginger miso dressing from whole foods is incredible. It really adds a thickness to salads and makes an amazing pasta. 2.99 or so from whole foods Cherry Chocolate ice cream from Trader Joe's like 3.99 I think. There's onions and cactus in the chorizo but it wasn't included. I would never buy soy milk (I also like the coconut drink and rice drink) from anywhere else but Trader Joes because it's the cheapest there as well as the peanut butter (except whole foods). Soy milk like 2.99 at Trader Joe's 0 comments Wednesday, April 16, 2014 Y 3:51 AM So I've been vegetarian for almost three years now and when I did that I happened to surprise most people who were close to me because I was the kinda gurl to triple stack it like there was no tomorrow. I mean, thinking about this, I'm craving that Wendy's cheese, lol. Well not really. I'm probably just craving a memory. But I started going vegan not long ago, and by not long ago I mean it's been barely been two months and by started I mean I've had some cheese here and there and most likely had something with dairy or some animal product in it because I mean everything has something in it and yeah. But if I were to quantify my intake I would say I've been 90 percent vegan. I used to be one of those people who never thought I would even go vegan because I saw no problems with dairy and the like but thanks to BF and sending me links I became informed on the torture that goes into ice cream and pizza and of course my decision is an ethical reason, as opposed to the popular belief that I'm doing this to lose weight. The information is out there, and I'm not going to sit here shouting at everyone why you should not kill animals and torture them because there are much more informed people and this post is more on my health and debunking some ideas. So with that being saiddddddddddddd. I think most people assume you need meat and the likes to survive because the first thing most people have asked me, or assumed of me, is that I may be deficient in essential vitamins or that I'm weaker than other people or whatever. I think it comes from the idea that people who don't consume meat are automatically starving themselves because they are not eating enough. But the reality for anyone is that eating more or even the idea of eating meat doesn't make you healthier, if anything the majority of people are overfed but malnourished. Now, since I transitioned even I at times wondered if I was deficient in something but as my most recent physical has indicated ALL my levels were just fine, no deficiencies except for vitamin D. But I'm a colored person who has been living in a 7 month winter hell, so I can't help that one. My cholesterol was fine, my heart, my blood pressure, etc. if anything I'm most likely the healthiest I've ever been in my whole life. I remember before my transition to deal with my depression that I used one of those blood pressure machines and it came up that I was pre-hypertense. This was when I ate meat. And also, I've noticed in the past month large and ginormous changes in my skin, hair, texture to my skin, and overall I feel much lighter. I've gained this profound glow to my skin and also my hair has turned even softer than I thought was possible. Anytime I ever had any dairy or the like I felt congested and mucus-ey but now I feel like I guess I'm breathing clearer. I also noticed a large reduction in blackheads which were always an issue but not anything crazy or anything. I almost want to say I feel lighter. Also, I have to say I'm constantly eating but eating less at each meal. I used to never feel this mass hunger but now when I'm hungry, she's hungry! Couple of things I've adopted now since being vegan: Drinking black coffee Drinking soda Eating tons of peanut butter Trying not to drink soy milk but rather almond or rice My sweet tooth has intensified French fries Ketchup I've become a lot more responsible. Cooking -- seriously, I never thought I would cook but since I can't go out to eat, I've learned to cook. I've made so much food, and learned to love what I make. Below are somethings I've made Enchiladas stuffed with mushroom in a chipotle tomato mushroom sauce. Vegetable pepper sauce pasta And tons of pbandj's and avocado tacos. See my skin below. This is me just out the shower, sans pomade. And here is a picture of me doing a side plank. Because I'm really proud of being able to hold my own body weight. -- Inviato da iPad Labels: health, truth, updates, Vegan, vegetarian 0 comments |
